Are you one of the thousands of West Australian’s who ride a bike more frequently for recreation and are now considering riding your bike to work? Or maybe you’re new to bike riding and looking for tips and tricks to get started. We’ve put together a compendium of safety tips you can use to ensure that your cycling commutes are as safe as possible:

  1. Wear a helmet on every ride.
  2. Yield to pedestrians and other vehicles where necessary.
  3. Wear fluorescent or bright clothing, especially in dim lighting conditions, to stay visible to other commuters.
  4. Keep a safe distance between yourself and other riders or vehicles.
  5. Don’t use a cell phone while riding your bike.
  6. Do an ABC check before riding your bike (Air, Brakes, Chain-Crank-Cassette).
  7. Carry books and other items in a bicycle carrier or backpack.
  8. Avoid riding at night if possible, to avoid collisions.
  9. Ride with the flow of traffic.
  10. Stay alert at all times.
  11. Stay up to date with the cycling legislation and laws in your city and/or state.
